Recently I was working on a computer that wouldn’t boot. A Dell Dimension 4700 with spyware and malware problems. After reinstalling windows the computer was still doing some weird things. It turns out not only did the computer have a virus but it also had bad memory. But that’s not what this post is about.

Each time I used the keyboard random windows would pop up or disappear. I was really scratching my head trying to figure out what was going on. The keyboard did not behave like it should. I had already spent several hours diagnosing the virus and reinstalling windows and memory. What is going on, I asked my self.

It turned out that if you looked closely the windows key on the keyboard had some gunk under it. It was making the key depressed. So everytime I typed a command on the keyboard the computer thought I was pressing the windows key. Too simple to fix! Watch out for the problems that are so simple to diagnose!
