Question by BWANA: Are Optical and HDMI Cables “directional” ?
I am setting up two players; a Blu-ray and a DVD Player. They both have HDMI and Optical Cable outlets. I have one Receiver.
I tried to split the optical cable so both devices would plug into “one” receptacle on the receiver. It did NOT work.
I have an HDMI cable running to my Projector. I tried splitting that from the two players, and that did NOT work either.
Are these cables DIRECTIONAL? Does the light through the optical cables travel in only ONE direction, so that a splitter does not work? Is it the same way with a HDMI cable?
Logically it seems they would work, so there must be something wrong with the way I’m hooking them up.
Please explain in detail if you’ve had any experience with this kind of set up.

The optical and HDMI ports are mono-directional (can be either input OR output), but the cables themselves can be used either way.
To combine two optical cables into one receiver – you need an optical switch.
To have two players connected to one projector, you also need an HDMI switch.

When it came i plugged it in to my pc screen and it kept saying “Check Signal Cable”
Im not sure if my monitor supports HDCP but it does have an empty area underneath if i wanted to install a DVI plug.
It is a samsung Syncmaster 943.
So is there a way to get it working or is it my screen thats incompatible?

Turn everything on – monitor + PS3.
Hold down the PS3 “soft” power button on the front (not the hard toggle button on the back) to reset the resolution.
That might do the trick for ya.
