My grandmother has a VCR/DVD combo player and up until recently it has been working just fine. She doesn’t use it very often, but when I spend the week with her sometimes, I bring DVD’s to watch. I was watching Batman Begins on DVD when all of a sudden an hour and a half into the movie I started hearing clicking noises from the player. I went to investigate and noticed that the VCR part was making the noise. I switched to VHS mode and the words on the screen said “EJECT R”. There was no VHS inside and decided to try playing a VHS tape to see if it would stop. When I inserted the VHS tape, the player turned off altogether after literally 3 seconds of playing the tape. I turned it back on and ejected the tape, the noise continued it and still said “EJECT R”. I turned it off. A day later, I turned the player on and the “EJECT R” was not there. I put in another DVD and went to watch it. An hour and a half later, clicking noises resumed. “EJECT R” was back.

The VCR part is not used very often, probably hasn’t been used in over a year. What is causing this problem? Is there any advice on how to fix it? Inexpensive preferably? Maybe a way to stop power from reaching the VCR part? I really don’t want to by a new player if I don’t absolutely have to, with money being tight and all. (I don’t wanna hear anything about “It’s only $ 35, just get a new one”)

I am afraid there is no easy way to shut off the VCR side. This is major disadvantage when buying appliances that are two in one. If this had been separate units you would not have the same issue.

Questions, does this happen at exactly an hour and half into playing the DVD?

You may need to get a service center to look into it and see if the hour and half is a clue as to what is happening.

Question by Im2hard2please: How can I copy only one “part” of a dvd’s content to another dvd?
I have a DVD that was made from a VHS tape by a friend several years ago. He took several different tapes and put them all on one DVD.

I now want to copy only one part of this dvd to a single dvd so I can give it to a family member. That family member would not be interested in the other “media stuff of another family” on the original dvd. Can this be done?

Recap: I want to extract one part of a dvd that has several different families on it and put it on another dvd.

There a couple of ways to do this.
1] get a DVD player and recorder together, hook them up and just copy the bit you want. Not very professional, though.
2] using a PC rip the DVD. You can then edit the results and burn onto a new disc. As this is not a copyrighted disc – Nero will let you do all you need.

I’ve got a PDA that apparently can be “Bluetooth enabled,” and I think my cellphone has that option too. I’m considering purchasing the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet, too, which can be used with either wifi or bluetooth.
