Question by mattcasey2017: Are people dropping Cable and Satellite TV and returning to the old-fashioned rabbit ears?
Are the old-fashioned rabbit ears the television technology of the future?
From: http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-rabbit-ears25-2009dec25,0,56684…
Rabbit ears make comeback in digital TV era
Southland viewers are finding they can get nearly three times as many
channels as they once could with an antenna. And best of all, they’re
free.
By David Sarno
December 25, 2009
On a recent winter night, while neighbors strung their Baldwin Park
homes with Christmas lights, the Lams and their three children sat in
front of a television set with rabbit ears sprouting out of the top.
Wait a second — rabbit ears? Is this 1950?
No, it’s almost 2010, and the Lams are a modern Los Angeles family
that, like many in the region, are rediscovering the convenience –
and economics — of the old-fashioned TV antenna.
In the wake of the transition to digital television, Southland viewers
are finding they can get nearly three times as many channels as they
once could with an antenna. And rather than the erratic, fuzzy
reception of yesteryear, today’s rabbit ears are capable of delivering
a surprisingly clear high-definition picture.
Best of all, it’s free, said Nancy Lam, the mother of the family.
“I’ve saved a lot of money by getting rid of cable,” Lam said. “We
only had to purchase the antenna one time, and now we have it forever,
instead of paying every single month.”
In these penny-pinching times, watching TV over the airwaves is
becoming an increasingly attractive option for many households,
particularly among the Los Angeles region’s minority communities.
Although the number of households with antennas in the U.S. fell
slightly in the last year, nearly 20,000 Asian American homes in the
region began using rabbit ears, and 8,000 African Americans switched
to over-the-air TV, according to the media research firm Nielsen Co.
Nearly a quarter of Latino households with televisions, or about
440,000 homes, already tune in with an antenna — the most of any
demographic group in the area.
About 11% of U.S. households — or about 13 million homes — watch
over-the-air broadcasts.
But watching TV over the airwaves has begun to appeal to a broader
audience.
“It’s the best-kept secret around here,” said Mike Mahan, who recently
installed a pair of antennas in the attic of his Ladera Ranch home and
dropped his cable subscription. “I just got tired of paying for
hundreds of channels I don’t watch.”
With antennas that can cost as little as a dollar, most Los Angeles
viewers can now pick up close to 70 channels, up from around 26 before
the federally mandated digital switch-over last summer. Nearly a dozen
of the digital channels are broadcast in high definition.
Having upgraded to the more sophisticated digital technology, stations
are able to slice their broadcast spectrum into a number of
subchannels, such as KNBC-TV Channel 4′s 4.1, 4.2 and 4.4.
Many of the new channels are aimed at the region’s ethnic communities,
giving rise to a growing selection of news, entertainment and
educational programming for Latino, Asian and Eastern European
viewers.
In Los Angeles, more than 30 over-the-air channels are available in
English, including stations featuring movies, dramas and children’s
programs. Major networks including ABC, CBS and NBC beam out daytime
and prime-time shows — and professional sports — in resolution with
clarity that may shock viewers expecting the hazy broadcast signals
they remember from childhood.
“Everyone who does it says the picture quality is actually better than
what you’re getting through cable,” said Patricia McDonough, a senior
vice president at Nielsen.
As more viewers tune in to the newly reenergized possibilities of
broadcast television, manufacturers say they can’t make antennas fast
enough.
“Our sales are going through the roof,” said Richard Schneider,
president of Antennas Direct, a St. Louis manufacturer of the devices.
Schneider said that sales had nearly tripled since the switch-over,
and that he had to add a new assembly line in his factory to meet the
demand. The company produces nearly 100,000 antennas every month,
thousands of which are sold in the Los Angeles area, he said.
Viewers are also finding they can combine broadcast television with
the growing array of movie and TV programming available online.
Mahan of Ladera Ranch dropped his subscription to Cox Cable last year
in favor of a pair of high-end antennas and an Internet connection
that lets him watch movies through Netflix and TV shows through video
websites such as Hulu .com. He even rigged up a device that can record
shows directly off the antenna.
But cable companies contend that over-the-air broadcasts are less
reliable and that the signal can be easily interrupted or weakened,
depending on where a home is. Homes near hills, for instance, may have
trouble receiving all the channels available in a given

Question by Professor Armitage: Is there a way to change the default setting on a VCR from switching to antenna when the power gos out?
Every time the power goes out the TV screen is blue and I need to go to menu and select “cable” as for some reason it automatically switches to “antenna” whenever the power goes out. They are going to be working on some electrical appliances tomorrow and going to be cutting the power. If all you want is a best answer you can show off your exceptional knowledge of TV’s and VCR’s in general and stand an excellent chance, but if you’d just kinda like to help a poor fool, please respond.

Question by Dominik K.: Play Xbox 360 through my computer with HDMI cable?
I’m not so sure on how to explain this, so bear with me.
Instead of using those Green Blue Red White Red cable inputs, (think thats how it goes), I have that cable that you only have to plug in to the 360 and T.V once. As in not multiple cables. The input thingo looks like a rectangle with a flat lump on the top, about 2 mm shorter on each side. It says on the cable “High Performance Interconnect HDMI Cable”.
So on the back of my computer, there’s a thing that you can put a plug some thing in to, but the plug I have in it changes it to be compatible with the cable I was describing just before. Now, I’ve plugged in the cable from the 360 in to the computer, and I have this program “Winfast PVR 2″ that lets me watch T.V and stuff like that on my computer. Whenever I try to find the 360, it doesn’t show up.
I’d just like to know if this plug is only for the monitor that I’m using, or if I can use this to play 360 through computer with it.
Sorry if I don’t make any sense, I just normally plug stuff in and it works. =P
Thanks.
Not quite, but thanks for trying. I actually want to play Xbox through my computer. That’s just windows media player. That doesn’t let you play games through the Xbox in to the computer.

I’ll try to help out here.
The cables you are describing are in different groups. The Red, Green, Blue (RGB) is called the component cables. They are 3 video cables that only go into TV’s with component hookups. The other Red and White cable are for sound and go into the A/V RCA plugs that are paired with the Yellow one. You don’t need the yellow one if you use the component video cables but you won’t get sound unless you hook up the Red and White cables.
The other cable mentioned is the HDMI cable. This is a digital cable that has both Audio and Video. You only have to hook this one up.
I’m not sure if you are just trying to get an internet connection through the 360 to the computer or if you are trying to use the computer monitor to play the 360. If it’s the internet you need, try this link to a similar question http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070703204836AA1Cxir

Question by wupierto: Free “cable” tv via internets?
Can I drop my cable tv provider and get shows to my tv via internet? I’m paying $ 160 for internet and cable tv and I would really like to pay for internet only. I have nice televisions and prefer watching content through them. Is there a box or software that can give me free ‘cable’ tv to my sets legally? I’m looking for channels like NBC, CBS, Food Network, etc (not premium channels)? What are my options? Thanks!

Question by jordinyc: Time Warner Cable “upgraded” our DVR boxes so we can’t record blocks of time anymore. Should I return the DVR?
Two features were removed from all Time Warner Cable DVR boxes this past week, at least in New York City, but everyone I’ve spoken with at TWC says it’s going to be implemented nationwide.
Removed Feature 1:
A week ago, I could say “record the Blahblah Blah Network from 10 PM to 2 AM every Sunday Night.” Not anymore. Now you can only schedule shows by name, not by timeslot.I could do it a week ago, before the upgrade, but now it’s simply not an option anymore.
Removed Feature 2:
You can’t specify which channels your series records from anymore. For example, if you want to watch the remastered Star Trek shows on CW, but not the original untouched versions on TVLand, you can’t. Also, if your show is broadcast one multiple stations at once as a “simplified” version of SAP, it records both broadcasts at once. This uses up both internal tuners, preventing any other shows running at the same time to be recorded. For example, many Cartoon Network shows are shown both on Chanel 61 in English, and on 845 in Spanish. Often both shows are recorded if you don’t specify 61, but now there is nowhere to specify “only record this show on Chanel xx.”
Question is this.
Should I return my DVR now in leu of a regular cable box and just buy and old timey VCR for $ 60 and use that? I’d be paying $ 20 less per month, so it would pay for itself after 90 days.
Or, should I wait for Time Warner to re-upgrade the boxes with all the features they removed during the last upgrade?
So Mr Lookalike, I shouldn’t downgrade from DVR to regular box, I should cancel my cable altogether?
Best answer:
Answer by ??Dwyane Wade look-a-like??
I have TWC and I dont think they will go back to the original settings. I still have a DVR thru TWC and I just gotten use to it. Another feature that they taken off when they upgraded the DVRs was u could search for a program by just going to the program in the guide and press whatever button it was to search for that program. Now I have to spell out the program that I wanna search for. I’ve gotten use to that too. So just give it time and u will get use to it too or u can change your service provider.

Question by Garrett G: Am I really getting 5.1 stereo from this setup?
I’ll try to make this as simple as possible.
Equipment: Sony PS3, Phillips 52″ 1080p HDTV, Yamaha Home Theater System.
Current audio setup: AV cable from PS3 to stereo input on the TV. It’s a left and right (white and red) RCA connector. From the TV to the Yamaha theater system is a “Digital Audio Cable” (not fiber optic).
I don’t think I’m getting 5.1 surround sound but I don’t know how to set it up? What cable do I need? Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Best answer:
Answer by JAIME H
NO you are not. I recommend that you route all audio through your Yamaha reciever. Use optical from your PS3 and the digital cable from your reciever (tv, directv, cable etc.). Your reciever will decode this to 5.1 audio. Be aware also that alot of your TV transmission is stereo but most likely your reciever will make it sound like a 5.1 audio feed.

if you own a computer and want to get the most out of it or your using it for video editing or gaming, you may have bought a new graphics card and you may notice along side the blue VGA or d-sub socket (the one you plug your monitor into) there may be a longer white (sometimes yellow, black, and even gray) socket, it may be labeled DVI (digital video interface). most monitors are coming with this type of connection now and you may think great ill go out and buy a DVI cable and make use of that socket, but you know theirs loads of different types of DVI cable, and if you don’t know you may buy the wrong one get home and find it doesn’t fit, AHHH, NOW WHAT… This video will hopefully prevent this annoying but VERY common situation.
