Having been a PC user all my life, I did a lot of research over the summer and finally decided to buy a Mac. This review is generally intended for fence-sitting PC owners considering making the switch but who are unsure which way to go.

Right out of the box there were many features that were quite impressive: the machine is blazing fast, the screen is huge and beautiful (though is very prone to glare problems), the machine is artistically beautiful, and the OS is generally quite stable (never a blue screen of death). I was careful to purchase a guidebook to the Mac as the documentation pamphlet is wholly inadequate for a new Mac user (I recommend David Pogue's "Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual"); unless you are already Mac-literate you will definitely need an outside reference to help you when you get stuck. Don't believe all the hype about how the Mac OS is totally intuitive; it isn't if you have been using a PC before. Likewise setup is not as easy as some claim. It took hours and three long phone calls to Apple to get my cable modem to talk to my Mac; further I installed MS Office for Mac on my system. To say that it did not go smoothly is something of an understatement; to this day every MS Office software update requires multiple computer restarts to get it updated (MS Word is especially buggy). While the computer looks great, I don't actually like typing on the aesthetically beautiful but very flat keyboard (I also miss the number keypad on the right of the keyboard, but in fairness to Apple it is available as a no cost option if you get it from Apple).

The machine is great at multimedia and the integrated speakers are much better than I expected. I love the fast startup and shutdown, and the relative lack of attention needed to software updates (except MS Office) and virus protection is a huge benefit of the Mac. Of course the Mac commands a premium price, and Mac loyalists would never consider anything else: this review isn't for them, it's for people unsure of whether to switch or not. In that vein, I now own a Windows 7 machine (that cost about a third of what the Mac cost) as well as the Mac, and if I had to do it over again, I would have waited for Windows 7 and skipped directly from XP (over the onerous Vista) to a new Windows machine. The headache of learning the Mac OS, the setup and updating issues I have had with the Mac, the additional cost of the Mac, the fact that some software my employer uses is incompatible with the Mac, and the fact that very good Windows 7 machines are now available at very reasonable prices adds up to one thing for me: skip the Mac.

Sorry Mac loyalists, I really wanted to love it.

my first imac was the G5 ambient sensor, I'm replacing it with this one, all the family use it and it just works, a simple migration and I was up and running again, won't talk about how much faster is because it's been 5 years but all I can add is that macs just works, plain and simple.

Apple iMac MB417LL/A 20-Inch Desktop

Enjoyable computing experience.

That sums it up. I've had this iMac for 6 months. And have owned the previous 2 or 3 versions as well.

Clean design eliminates 5 or 6 cables, but still takes up little more space than a 20" monitor itself. Hardware and software work well together. Software programs integrate nicely with one another and there's lots of high quality software included.

Stylish.

No bloatware to uninstall.

No registry to deal with. Programs are hidden inside of a package (icon.) Just drag the icon to your apps folder to install. Drag out of folder to trash to uninstall. Simple.

Lack of spyware and viruses is a big plus. No annoying security prompts and programs running in the background that are setup to deal with this stuff.

Windows open like you would expect.

Very clean software update mechanism. Updates actually fix problems and improve the speed of the software.

Very distinguished looking operating system - graphically speaking.

Truly plug and play backup feature called Time Machine. Just plug in an external hard drive.

Spotlight index feature also sets it the experience apart - quickly 7 easily find files and launch apps.

Very well organized. System preferences are all cleanly laid and easy to find. User folders cleanly laid out.

Quick Look - press the space bar and quickly "preview" any file without opening the app. Press again to close. Fast.

Very quiet. Nice beautiful screen. Easy & pleasing to the eye user switching. Easy wireless networking.

Which computer do you think I should buy?

I have a budget of about 10,000 dollars total for software and everything. Depends on what you want to do with the computer. You should look into the 8-Core Mac Pro if your budget is $10,000 - It can run Windows for your gaming and is the very best for graphical design.

I bought this for my daughter who is at college and has her own flatscreen TV in her room. She wanted to be able to hook up her Mac laptop to her TV so that she could watch either DVD's played on her laptop or streamed programs from Hulu. She was able to get this hooked up and is really happy with the setup.

I had to get this to be able to switch from my new macmini to my pc using my old KVM switch with only has a vga connector. It works fine for this most of the time. Sometimes though you have to mess with it to get it to work correctly. Like I just installed Windows 7 via bootcamp and upon rebooting got a black screen. Only way to fix this was to connect the mini-dvi video connector that orignally came with the mac first and then windows somehow saw the displayport or installed the displayport drivers and I was able to use it with Windows 7. As far as macosx goes you have to hit detect displays to get the maximum resolution for your monitor to show up otherwise you will be stuck with very low resolutions. If bought it recently it should already have the most recent bios update that some people mentioned so no need to update although if you are having trouble this may be worth checking. I'm taking off 1 star for the design of the end of the connector that makes it hard for alot of vga connectors to stay flush since the plastic gets in the way. If you do get it to work you won't be able to tell the difference from dvi since it the display will look just as good and sharp. May have problems running hi-def content also though.

Does exactly what it should...got freaked out at first cause when I connected it to my MacBook all that appeared on the TV screen was the wallpaper (no matter what I actually had on the computer screen). This I found out was easily fixed under the System preferences ->Displays...just find the checkbox that says "mirror display" or "mirror screen" or something like that. So now it works great and I can watch any streaming video or tv shows etc. from my laptop on my 42" TV! Just remember there is no sound with this cable...that's a separate audio cable.

Ok, there seems to be some confusion as to what this product will do over the mini-dvi to VGA adapter that Apple sells, so I hope I can shed some light on the matter. The mini-dvi to VGA allows you to display your computer monitor on your television screen with resolutions that your COMPUTER MONITOR is capable of. This is very limiting as most TVs will not support the higher resolutions of the monitor, leaving you with little better than 800x600. In comes the mini-dvi to HDMI adapter, which allows you to display your computer monitor on your television, but the real magic is in the resolutions you are now given. The resolutions are HDTV compatible, allowing for HD viewing( I view mine in 720p). If you're looking for a quick answer, this product is much better than any mini-dvi to VGA that is out, simply for the fact that your resolution will be higher on the TV, resulting in a clearer picture and much more readable text.

Can I connect my laptop to my HDTV converting from (MiniDVI to VGA), to (VGA to DVI) to DVI to HD?

I messed up when I was ordering my cables because I thought I had my computer starting at a regular dvi, but my mac is actually started with a mini DVI. So I had the (MiniDVI to VGA) and bought a VGA to DVI converter and now wanted to use all of them. I tried it on my TV and couldnt get it to work. Is it possible? My 1 1/2 year old Time Capsule died yesterday without warning. It ran hot even when not being used - it had no off switch an no apparent sleep mode. I'm out a router, wireless, and disk storage.

I'm satisfied with my other Apple products, but not this. The heat may have shortened the life - maybe not. I'd like something a little greener this time around.

Instead of the Time Capsule, I'm buying a separate router and hard drive: a Linksys WRT610N Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless Router and a Western Digital WD Elements 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive WDE1UBK10000N (Black). It may be not as easy to set up, but I'll take my chances.

ok i bought this thinking it was a solution for backup and other purposes
here are the reasons why i rated this so poorly

1 - you can't transfer multiple large files. time capsule simply freezes and once it does... oh boy, you have to reset it like three times
2 - it heats more than my oven. i live in brazil and we at the studio managed to fry an egg on top of it
3 - transfer speed is slow. really slow

basically its always bugging. i have used macs since the very first mac that came out but this thing here is simply a scam. they sell you something that stupid and if youd want to return to apple, what would they say???
the airport portion of it works fine but as soon as you have the hard drive involved in the process...

When the Time Capsule works properly, it's great. Unfortunately, this is a rare occurrence. This was a complete hassle to set-up right out of the box. My Apple Care plan for my Mac covered the Time Capsule too, and boy was I glad. I had to call in several times to troubleshoot the thing. It's VERY flaky and needed to be re-setup roughly once a month. And yesterday it finally died. It powered down after being on for a few months. I was able to get some life out of it, but just heard a grinding noise (presumably the hard disk spinning) and it eventually died for good. Good riddance. What a disappointment. Now I'm going to find a cheaper alternative that (hopefully) works.

i bought this to replace my airport extreme base station. i didnt have any problem setting it up since i duplicated my aebs settings but i felt that my wireless connection was slower than before. i also had several problems with my internet going down. apple was helpful but since it was a continuous issue, they suggested to exchange for a new one. instead i just returned it. i couldnt be bothered with the aggravation since my aebs worked fine.

I am a computer savvy person. This device does not work right out of the box. After 3 hours last night on my own and 2 hours today with Apple care, it was determined by Apple that I needed to return the product because they could not get it to work. I tried using it with a brand new macbook and a year old macbook. Both were unsuccessful. This product cannot continuously connect to the internet. Many many many others have had this problem. Just do a google search for "problems with Time Capsule" and you will see all the problems they have had with it. This is not typical of Apple products and they really should fix this device. Trust me, unless you want a huge headache avoid this product.

Our company is based in Japan, so we love using the small iMacs as terminals in our too-small stock room. They are prefect, very fast, connect to anything we need them to, and have all the features you expect of a Mac. The 15" model is great for people who need a compact machine that moves out of the way immediately, and the screen is also great for anyone with less than perfect vision (like me) since you can move the screen right up close to your face. Try doing that with a CRT. All in all, I love the current generation of iMacs to death.

For years I have dealt with PC's. The freezing up at inappropriate moments, the noise, how they often lag. With some nudging from my girl friend and mother who both have used Macs extensively, I looked into them, and purchased the iMac,, and I have never been so happy using a computer. It used to be a major headache just to open attachments on an e-mail, often times ending in a colorful proliferation of four letter words being bandied about. But with the iMac, the most simple things are just that simple. Sure there may be some drawbacks such as a couple of web sites have glitches when viewing, but the bottom line is that does not matter.

If you're tired of a non user friendly computer which is always crashing. A system to use at home which won't make you want to trash it, this is your answer.

It pains me to rate my iMac so low because I have been a Mac booster for many years, after converting from a PC. I will say up front that I am not a computer nerd and need something simple that I can operate without reading a lot of books or going to school.

A long time ago I returned a new desktop PC to Gateway because I couldn't operate it intuitively (my fault), and Gateway graciously took it back, no questions asked. I then bought a new little Mac 160 notebook and was immediately able to operate it. I used it for years until it finally smoked its motherboard and had to be replaced. The next computer was another Mac notebook, a 5300 CS, which was not one of Apples finest products, but nonetheless it was fairly efficient and easy to operate. It finally lost the top half of its color LCD and ran out of memory and I was again forced to buy a new computer. The jazzy new iMac looked like just the ticket. I now own iMac serial number 0T213E6FMAY.

My iMac was trouble from the start and I got no help from Apple other than advice, and after 90 days I couldn't even get that unless I forked over an extra [$$$] for an extended warranty, which I did.

Here are just a few of my complaints:
1. The iMac functions pretty much like a PC and is no longer as intuitive as the earlier Apple products they built their ease of operation reputation on.
2. At times the screen locks up, the "OFF" button won't work, and the only way to shut it down is to unplug it from the wall.
3. The "OFF" button is located near the left-back of the body in a hard-to-reach place, accessible only with the left hand, not the right, a very poorly thought out location.
4. There is no "ON-OFF" switch on the keyboard.
5. The so-called "SLEEP" function doesn't always work like it should, certainly not like the earlier notebooks. It sometimes awakens hung up.
6. Sometimes when the shut-down command is given it only goes into the sleep mode, can't be shut down by the "OFF" button, and has to be unplugged from the wall for a forced shut-down. On re-booting after such a forced shut down the system has to go through an automatic hard drive assessment before it is again functional. Even after such a shutdown and hard drive assessment the system sometimes doesn't work right.
7. Apple has loaded so much unnecessary "bloatware" bells and whistles into their OX10 and 9.2.2 operating systems there is no way an ordinary user can operate it easily. Even my paid Apple authorized technicians have had difficulties working out the wrinkles. I never know what to expect next.
8. The optical mouse clicker was too sensitive, even at full adjustment for firmer spring resistance. I replaced it with a Logitech optical mouse.

After years of using Apple products I may go back to a PC because my iMac no longer offers the advantages Macs once had over PC's. It doesn't matter to me if the problems stem from Apple software or hardware; the trouble remains and is still real. Software unready for the market is just as bad as a defective motherboard design. A top notch professional computer technician recently told me that Mr. Steve Jobes' tech meddling is responsible for the newest G4 Macs no longer operating with the traditional intuitive ease of the earlier Macs, to say nothing of the continual technical glitches.

I have heard similar complaints from other iMac owners. You won't see this in the advertising, and some iMac users are reluctant to admit the weaknesses of their expensive new toys. I am not one of them.

I give the iMac two stars because of its very practical swivel head and clean looks (one star each).

The Apple iMac is a great computer that has been nothing but an easy transition from the PC world. Its design is much more than a statement it actually has a very useful application, the swiviling screen allows you to move the scren anywhere and the small footprint of the base makes putting it on a cluttered desk easy. Having only one power cord even greatly limits the amount of desk clutter that is added by the computer itself. The imac is speedy and more than capable of performing any task I give it. Mac OS X is beautiful and speedy. Everything works like a charm. Even an after market MP3 player I bought worked fine with it right out of the box.

This is definitely one of the best desktops out there without a doubt. I love the new design, I think they really improved on that part. I was going to get the new aluminum imac, untill I started reading the stories on various discussion boards that the screens on them are: too reflective, and they used cheap TFT/H-IPS(?) screens that are giving many people fits-especailly Professionals-an EXTRAORDINARY number of people-I would think Apple may have to do a recall. Im not sure what to think about the near flat keyboard.
So...I went to my local BEST BUY and they had a few of all the just-discontinued Oct 2006 models left;
I chose the 17", 2.0mhz and will move up to 2 gb RAM. 1 weeks and so far no trouble;
But heres the catch-this same model was about $1450 a month ago, and I got mine at a whopping $950!
New, sealed never been opened.
With 1gb RAM it seems fast enough, but I may boost it too 1.5 or 2 gbs -and scream...
I will wait until week 51 of my owning it, then get Applecare.

I don't think I will use windows again and I don't hate windows at all. I just don't understand how it became a popular format to use. This was my first experience with a mac and I will never switch back to a p.c. OSX is easier and quicker to use than windows. I don't have virus problems. I don't have to buy any anti-spyware software. I feel I saved money buying a mac. It costs more to start off with a mac but if you buy one and feel you've been ripped off in anyway contact apple and you will speak with someone who speaks ENGLISH fluently. Try doing that with HP or Dell. You will need a translator to order a part for you from India. I wish you good luck. Been There Done That! The only thing I wish was more available to OSX are music downloading websites. Limewire Pro is what is available and is pretty bad especially if you have used Ares before. I have heard that pay sites are ok for mac users but I have never used them myself. When you get your mac out of the box it will do way more than your regular p.c. will from the start. It will walk you through the process of setting it up to you. One really great thing about OSX is that you can bookmark the websites you use on a regular basis. With one click you can switch from ebay to amazon in a matter of seconds. I read my mail, check amazon and ebay in less than five minutes. If you can't shake some of your windows ordeals you can by using parralels for around 80 bones and you can use windows on your mac. I did it but I hardly use it. Maybe for music and thats about it. Other than that you will have a one day ordeal figuring out the mini mouse and how OSX works. After that you will probably be very happy with your purchase.

Enslaved to the common people PC for well, ALL MY LIFE, it was a relief to finally get the cash to get one these super machines called a Mac. Took it out of the box, plugged it in, turned it on, and the rest is history. Very simple to setup, use and pretty much no headache about it. All that expensive virus software for PC's? Don't sweat it with this, comes with the firewall installed. Very user friendly, magnificent screen that is at times way to bright. Saves alot of space and makes a room look elegant, compared to the bulkiness of a PC. Why talk more, if your pondering about getting the low priced PC but in the long run going to cost plenty of $$$ to maintain it, go for the Mac instead. It sounds like a great computer. I think it would definatly suit your needs as long as you're not trying to edit LARGE scale NTSC format video............for that it's better to go with the towers with multiple procesors and all...............but I think you'll find it will suit your needs a lot better than any PC

Unless you are into arts...or very heavy graphics, do NOT buy a Mac. Also, do not go to Dell, HP, Compaq, etc. sites. Go to www.newegg.com Then navigate to where the pre-built computers are. The site is very helpful...and has lots of specifics and buyer recommendations. NewEgg also has the best prices and customer service in the industry.

New Macbook Pro 15'' or the New iMac 24''?

I can get a mac in a little bit, but im stuck picking between Macs. I was first looking at the Macbooks until they turned pro, and now that they are, even better! But when I look at it, I dont really want a 13inch screen :/ its a great computer but i think thr 15'' model is much better. I dont like the 17 inch for some reason because I think the screen is a little... too big. Not my thing. Which all macs have but whatever. and I dont think the 9400m graphics chipset from nvidia cuts it. Which one do i get? the iMac looks better but Id like a portable computer as well :/ Whats worth more the money? Im sorry i put the wrong iMac. The imac i was supposed to put was either the 2.93Ghz or the 3.06GHz model. (1799$ or 2199$) All the answers were actually very helpfull. I do want the portability, and to clarify, I'm not a college student, and i like games. So i guess ill bootcamp windows vista or windows 7. Ill go with the MBP 15'' because it's in the middle. I think it's perfect. The price is whatever, But i think it will be well worth it. This is me falling for my secret desire to own my very first Notebook. and to that, my very first MAC! I think i will just go with the MacBook Pro 15''. Thank you. I was suggested i go with the 15'' Macbook Pro of 1699$, and just upgrade the harddrive to the 320GB @ 7200 RPM one. The ram really doesnt matter to me, The price is actually less than the 1999$ model, and I dont think that g600m gt graphics will make a really big impact. Does the difference between 2.53GHz and 2.66GHz really make a difference? It's not worth it is it?

bro you are like me.... i was hesitating between 13" unibody macbook and 24" new iMac‘ and i got a macbook now, because the reason that may not help you a lot, i never own a notebook before........ :) typically, you are now the same as me,,,,, first, what are you buying for?? if you are professional someone, and you know what you're going to do exactly, like video editing something, then choose by your work-place, do you always like to work in one place all time, then buy the iMac, 24" huge screen brings you a giant fun with designing and visual appreciating, a lot better than 15", and i think the desktop-class video card will be better than the macbook, huge screen is delicious if you are like me, sometimes lazily lie on sofa or bring out n sit outside for sunny days, then buy the macbook pro and enjoy the portability! it's fun to bring your little world into any place you want..... if you are not sure what are you going to do with it or you dont have to aim to some special all-day-work, then choose by whatever you like..... come on,, look at that iMac, open the gallery and look at it...like it? buy it and come on....look at that macbook.....look...the shining aluminum ... like it? buy it.... it is a hard choice sometimes between notebook and desktop... good luck, dont hurry, make a right choice!!
