I purchased the Aspire One D250-1610 because of the good reviews on this site and I have not been disappointed. I needed a netbook solely for connectivity....as an extra link to the Internet at home when all the desktops were in use by the kids, or as a way to check my e-mail when traveling, and this little beauty does everything quickly and easily. I was amazed how simple the setup was, and the netbook immediately recognized my home network. The connection is very fast.

I've only had the Aspire for 4 days, but I love it already! It's a great netbook for the price you pay!

I love this ruby red netbook.. It is so pretty and cute and light and works way better connecting to my wireless connection than my regular laptop. The only disappointment was finding out that it did not have bluetooth in it already. You can buy a small bluetooth device though. I finally found a carrying case online that fits perfectly. It does have a multi cardreader which you can transfer info or pics etc through from your other computers so that makes it easier to get stuff in it. I am going to see if my portable USB hard drive, which I use for backup works, which it should because the netbooks is USB enabled. All in all, this is a fabulous little netbook that you can drag from room to room and even to your bed at night or sit outside on your patio or front steps with as well as travel simply. It fits in my purse.

Great machine, much smaller than a full size PC. Really neat to have this setup in your house for backup, sharing, etc. I even run a web server and SQL for development on it.

Error - no disks on server????

DUH........

When i got the server I opened up the drive bays, they did seem very cheap and fragile so i was careful re-inserting them.

What i failed to do was keep the lever open, while inserting the disk. Then WHEN FULLY SEATED, close the lever which locks the drive into the bay.

User error solved, happy camper!

After configuring the server, I was about to add a second Hard Disk. When I opened the drawer to add a Hard Disk - the drawer fell apart. Looking at the construction - the plastic hinge on the removable hard disk drawer was not completely formed and therefore could not hold. Called Acer customer service - first disconnected me after being on hold for about 15 minutes (I guess that is what they do at the end of their day - because when I called back - I was told to call the next day). I contacted online support - after responding to their questions I was told they could not help and told me to call in over the phone. When I called - I was eventually told to call again during business hours because this product in only supported by their second line support. So called again - only to be told that plastic parts are not covered under their warrantee and that I must have broken it. (Sure - as the part was not correctly molded!!.) I was told that I could buy a replacement for $20 plus shipping, the only other option, I was told, return the product!!!!

Rather technical to set up, especially if everything doesn't work right out of the box. I eneded up reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling everything before I could get the system to come up. And help? Non existant, even on their website, which is surprising for a company as established as Acer.

But, once things were up and running, and with a bit of help from a friend, everything is working smoothly.

One complaint: the hard drive trays are extremely flimsy, and one broke through the simple act of installing the 2nd hard drive.

Conclusion: recommended for those with some technical background and don't mind taking some time to get things running smoothly. Not an out-of-the-box-ready system, but well worth the money once it's running.

This is a very small home server that is big enough to hold a total of 4 SATA hard drives for a total of 8TB or more. The server comes with 1TB and I upgrade my with another 1TB for a total of 2TB join space. There is different RAID for mirroring, combine the disk spaces and other types of RAID offering after you add in 4 hard drives. It does a pretty good job of back up your home computer.
You can also setup a website to share your pictures, music, video, software, etc. For the free domain use the one comes with Microsoft Home Server. Your domain name will be .homeserver.com.
Be sure if you are sharing to download an Add-in application to extending your session time out. I was sharing my brother upload a freeware application and it timed out. Another great application to use for FTP is File Server Serv-U. They offer a free version for home user.
The unit is very quiet and you can hardly hear the fan noise. Highly recommend this home server to centralize your home storage.

I received the Acer Aspire WHS about 5 weeks ago. The server is solid and very easy to use. When I opened the box the server seemed tiny compared to the pictures I saw on Amazon. It is a nice compact box, perfect size for all it can do. It was incredibly easy to set up and configure. I added a 1 TB drive to it so it now has 2 TB (1.82 TB). This way I could duplicate the data for some shared folders for added protection. I have about 12 shared folders that are accessible from all 4 of my computers. It effortly backs up all the computers in my household every night. (2 personal computers and 2 corporate computers, 2 are Windows XP and 2 are Windows 7). Setting up remote access was also very easy. I can log into and remotely control all 4 computers, from home or a friends house. I can access all the files on the server from anywhere via the web interface. The interface has a great upload utility to make it easy to drag and drop files that need to be uploaded to the server remotely. Microsoft has a free dynamic dns service which is easily configured within the console. Another great feature is that I can access my movies/pictures/music on the server from my xbox 360 and slingcatcher! The WHS really tied it all together and now I have peace of mind that my home movies, pictures, music, software and data are safe.

I don't have one bad thing to say about this server. Great value!

Positives:
Hard disk is pre-partitioned into two 50-gb drives, which makes installing another OS easier.
Fingerprint recognition actually works!
Good assortment of card slots and buttons.
I like having the extra battery.

Negatives:
Sound quality is awful. There's only one tiny little speaker on the front grill.
The laptop runs hot.
Physically, it's thicker than expected- the new MacBook feels smaller.
Boot-up is a little slow.
Does not include alot of preinstalled software like Office or Works.
Power jack is in an inconvenient location with regards to closing the included screen cover.

This is my first tablet PC. I also own a Shuttle desktop that I spec'd out myself, a Sony Vaio laptop and and iMac. I wanted this tablet for notetaking on the fly and some other specialized applications, and I was attracted by the high-end features at a reasonable price.

I have owned the device for a month now, had it in daily use, and I have not been disappointed. First, I am finding many new uses for a tablet, like doing my Quicken finances--much easier when you can point to a cell and tap in the numbers.

The device itself--its case is plastic, but solid and good quality. The screen has the disadvantage of a fairly narrow viewing angle and compared to the Sony Vaio Xbrite, it is not spectacular, but still good. The sliding track mechanism works reliably and feels solid. It does limit the angle of use when in notebook configuration, though.

The fingerprint recognition works about 2 times out of 3. The screen does need to be recalibrated from time to time. And I find that Windows XP shutdown is sometimes slow--seems to delay closing Explorer.

That is it for the complaints though. The pen works great, eraser and all. The pen on paper feel is excellent. Bluetooth and wireless work flawlessly out of the box. The machine is really very quiet. Battery life--there are two batteries included, the lighter of which gives only about one and one-half hours, but the larger gives well over three in my experience. There are ports and connectors everywhere.

In short, this is not the Motion tablet, but for what it is, I believe it is an extraordinarily good value unless you plan to use it outdoors in direct sunlight or carry it in your hand all day long. I am very happy with my choice.

I really don't like fans in notebooks at all. But if they're *really* quiet and run only occasionally, I can live with them.

Unfortunately, the fan in the 1810T runs constantly alternating between barely audible and definitely noticeable.

The touchpad seems small for extended comfortable use, too.

I think this is going back. Too bad since it had everything else I wanted.

The processor is just a little too underpowered for my taste. I.e. some common tasks take longer than on my >3 yr old AMD 64 X2 3600+ But otherwise, the hardware on this thing is great. It's a dainty power sipper. Only 10 watts to the CPU. Nutty. Even the large-ish HD sips the juice. Windows 7 booted up and shut down considerably faster than XP. But man oh man, what a pain in the dark side otherwise. (win7)

A key app for my business (Webposition) wouldn't run correctly on Win7, so I had to downgrade to XP. However, Acer will not provide ANY support with XP downgrades on this model. The first person just hung up on me. The second was rude and wouldn't even tell me which of the three webcam drivers listed on their site for the 1810T/XP was the correct one. Lame.

Had some trouble installing XP b/c 1810T wouldn't recognize my new external CD/DVD as a boot disk (Samsung SE-S084) unless I turned off AHCI mode in the BIOS. Problem is... when you do that, you can't easily switch back to SATA/AHCI from IDE once the OS is installed... so your HD might not perform up to its potential.

If I both liked and could use Win7 for key apps, I'd give this Acer a full five stars... but well, I don't and I can't so I didn't. So many contractions.

Before I managed to get XP to load I called Tiger Direct for a RMA. They sent the pre-paid UPS sticker via email in seconds. So kudos to them. (I've heard so many bad things about Tiger Direct over the years, perhaps partially unfounded.)

I wanted something small, light, powerful with long battery life.

I had to send it back because the keyboard had some keys that did not work. So now I am waiting on a replacement, had to wait a while to get it so so kind of a bummer.

pros:
- battery life was as promised, 5-7 hours depending on what you do.
- way faster than my old N280 netbook (others report passmark of 891).
- variable speed fan runs a lot but is quiet even at some of the midrange speeds. The targus (10") netbook chill mat fits it nicely. Has vents on the bottom so a netbook cooler helps.
- Memory and HD doors on the bottom, this is a big plus for me. HD easy to change, be sure to undo the ribbon cable connector before lifting the HD out.
- Win7 reports 3999 Mb of total RAM (pretty good).
- BIOS can boot from USB devices (needed for emergency recovery).

cons:
- build quality seems a bit low, guess I am used to business model Dell's.
- screen flickers slightly, as if the brightness setting is unstable, but is otherwise crisp and bright.
- keyboard didn't work on my unit, feels cheap like my netbook did.

fyi:
- Comes with a 12Gb recovery partition, it prompts you to burn recovery DVD's, have to buy a USB dvd. You can order recovery Dvd's from Acer's support website. They appear to be bootable DVD's but I did not try them. Documentation says restoring from the DVD's does not remake the recovery partition, but preserves it if it is there.
- comes with a cloth sleeve, buy a better case if you want protection.

The price is right so no complaints if it works.

I needed a PC that would hold, edit and display images. Not only does this computer meet all my expectations, but it is fast, portable and lightweight. The screen is incredibly bright and I find the keyboard easy to navigate. The mouse was too sensitive for me, and with Windows 7 help, I rectified the problem. I have used various computers/operating systems/drivers for 35+ years and this Acer rises to the top for ease of use, speed and capacity. A long battery time is not a priority for me, but its portability is.

I bought this netbook to do the everyday minor details and to ultimately phase out my Sony Laptop. Overall, I am very pleased with this product. In reality, there is not much I would change, though the "techies" out there might disagree.

There are two drawbacks that I wish would have been addressed:
One. The Office trial edition, I guess I didn't read the fine print. I looked all over for the Microsoft Product Key to activate the program, but apparently I need to buy this separately on MSNs website - Cost $80. MSN does allow you to use the Office programs, but only for about 20 times until it becomes inactive.

Second. As stated before, the Windows Starter Pack. As those before have stated, it has its limitations. I haven't tried to tackle this issue yet, but I do ultimately see me buying the upgrade.

So to the meat and potatoes. Would I recommend this product? Definitely, Yes. Just know that you may need to buy a couple of upgrades. The internet connection is great and fast. The keyboard really is not that small, once you get used to it. Great product for the price. Hope this helps.

The netbook hardware is nice. The keys are very slightly cramped but this is dictated by the convenient small size. The touchpad with multi-finger control is a great feature. The only drawback is Windows 7 Starter edition. There is almost nothing you can do to customize the desktop. You can't change the color or background picture. The Mac folks must be loving Microsoft's philosophy on this one.

The Acer Aspire D250 is a great netbook PC, and the 1197 flavor contains four differentiators:
(1) Windows 7 Starter OS
(2) 250GB hard disk drive
(3) 6 cell battery (~8 hours' lifespan)
(4) the standard English keyboard layout

..and it comes in blue :-)

Having visited 8 different retail stores and having tried/returned two Asus 1005HA's, I spent a considerable amount of time comparing / contrasting models.

In comparing the Acer Aspire One D250 to the bestselling Asus 1005HA-PU17 and other netbooks:
(1) The D250 is lighter, even with the 6 cell battery. If one were to buy the 3 cell battery (~2 hour life) to save even more weight, it would be in the featherweight category. The Asus 1005HA's battery is so bulky and unbalanced it almost makes the netbook want to teeter-totter around its back legs.

(2) The D250 is quieter. Unlike the 1005HA, the fan does not turn on when browsing the web, running virus scans, etc.

(3) The D250's keyboard is 89% the size of a regular keyboard, and it is smaller than Dell, HP, and Asus 10" netbook keyboards. However, I was able to type my usual 70WPM without issue.

(4) The D250 has _NO_ hard disk vibrations. The Asus 1005HA had hard drive vibrations that were not only noticeable, they ran straight into my wrists and were irritating. Many other 10" netbooks have this problem too. This issue becomes very noticeable when you spend 15 minutes drafting a document or writing an e-mail.

(5) The 1005HA has a slightly bigger touchpad.

Canadian users would be wise to order the 1197 version of the D250 as the U.S. keyboard is much easier to use than the multilingual French/English keyboard. The Shift keys are wide, and the Enter key can be reached easily. Such is not the case with the multilingual keyboard.

My only complaint is that I prefer a matte screen to the glossy screen. It is vulnerable to reflections and glare.

***Notes on Windows 7***
Windows 7 Starter is very comparable to Windows XP. The main feature disabled on Win7 Starter edition is the "Aero" feature, which is standard on Win7 Home Edition or Premium versions. However, the Intel Atom/N270 and Intel 950 GMA chipset lacks the graphics horsepower to run "Aero," even if one were to upgrade Win7 editions. This hindrance applies to any netbook with the N270/950 chipset (Asus, HP 110, Dell Mini), not just the Acer D250. At the time this review was written, upgrading from Starter to Home Premium had a steep price tag -- in the $75 - $80 range. And the "Aero" feature would have to be disabled anyway...

Nevertheless, the Acer D250 is among the best built, the quietest, and lightest of the 10" Intel Atom based netbooks available today. Highly recommended.
