Western Digital (NYSE:WDC) and Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE:HIT) announced today that they have entered into a definitive agreement whereby WD will acquire Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., in a cash and stock transaction valued at approximately .3 billion. Under the terms of the agreement, WD will acquire Hitachi GST for .5 billion in cash and 25 million WD common shares valued at 0 million. This is an example of the dreaded “clicking noise”, often signifying a defective hard drive. What a pity this drive is brand new and has no obvious SMART errors, even after an extensive test with smartctl. Take a look at the delays (appearance of icons in Finder) caused by this annoying self-parking. No more realtime audio editing possible. I wonder what Western Digital has to say about this, as this is the replacement for the same type of drive which had bad sectors – but NO clicking sounds. Customer service had me waiting for “just a month” now after the swap. Not that great. At least they replied, but with no real information about this issue… 1/2 of 5 stars.

I installed a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB Hybrid Hard Drive (HHHD) which is a combination of 500GB of HDD and 4GB of SSD in my 2010 13″ MacBook Pro. The drive supposedly remembers the most used applications and stores them in the SSD as cache. The drive is significantly faster than my stock Hitachi 250GB 5400rpm. How much faster? Let’s try a boot up on the machine of OS X. If you have questions, feel free to ask. At some point, I will install Windows 7 a la Boot Camp but that might not be for a little while (lazy and don’t need it at the moment).
