Some time system restore has been disabled or damaged by viruses. There is a way to manually restore the system files to repair your registry. Let’s talk about where the system restore files are located first. The location of your system restore files are in C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore or C:\System Volume . Next find a good set of registry files to copy. They may look something like this _restore{558C94FD-3C7F-4954-A02D-

Once you have the old registry files you can then copy the items to the C:\WINDOWS\system32\config folder. Next rename the files to the 5 file names below. You’ll need to delete the present files in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\config folder and replace them with the new ones you just copied.

5 files that make up the registry are:

  1. SAM

I use Bartpe, but I warn you the process if very slow using the file manager to access the hard drive. I recommend booting into your system with Knoppix to access the hard drive. BartPE can take up to an hour to get the files deleted and renamed.
