Use your 2.5″ SATA drive over eSATA or USB, November 17, 2009

The Eagle Tech case allows for SATA transfers at up to 3Gbps, which on paper is six times faster than USB2. It also does USB2 transfers to make it compatible with just about any recent decent computer.

Initially, the door would not close on the case. The Hitachi drive that I use may not be a perfect match for this enclosure because the drive would not mate with the internal SATA connector. Jiggling the drive inside the case did not help and there is no way to have seen what was interfering. After failing to mate the drive with the internal connector on several tries, I was tempted to force the door closed, but sanity prevailed and the eventual solution worked every time for me. Orienting the drive case vertically like a grocery sack and allowing gravity to help seat the drive was all it took. I’ve removed the drive a few times to mate it to a computer that only has internal eSATA connectors and the gravity assist mating mode has solved the mating problem with my Hitachi drive. It would have been great if this kit came with a SATA to eSATA cable so that I could just leave the drive in the enclosure when the computer only has internal SATA connectors.

Please note that when using the eSATA interface, you must also provide power to the case with the dual USB to power cable. For me, I only used one of the two USB connectors on the cable and I have transferred several TBs of data without error. I’ve been using the case for a few weeks without any issues on a HP HDX18 laptop with a combo USB/eSATA connector. The case, cables, and pouch seem durable and the pouch keeps the kit tidy and helps to ensure that I won’t misplace the cables.

There is a blue LED on one side that illuminates when powered from the mini-USB cable, or from the dual-USB power cable. There is also a red LED that flashes with activity. The drive has four stick-on rubber feet that help to keep it stable on the table, but the feet are of the type that usually peel off after a few months use.

The metal case thermally couples to the drive very well. After several hours of heavy use, the case was perhaps 10 degrees warmer than room temperature, and when I powered down and removed the drive, it too was just barely warmer than room temperature. The ad claims that the case is Tool-less, but you’ll need either the provided key or a straightened paper clip to get the case open.

I owned the previous version of the same case made by Eagle and liked it so much that I ordered two more of these. This newer version has a metallic mesh casing with a solid blue power light and a flashing red data access light.

The FIT feature really is fast and easy. There’s a pin that snaps out from underneath the base, and you use it to pop open the lid of the enclosure. Then you just slide the hard drive in and snap the lid shut. No screws involved.

It comes with a USB data cable, a USB “Y” power adapter cable (with two USB plugs on one end for computers with older USB ports that supply less current), and an eSATA cable. When transferring data over USB, the USB data cable is the only cable required. When transferring data over the eSATA cable, the USB “Y” power adapter cable must also be plugged in. There’s also a base that lets you stand the hard drive vertically on its side as well as a padded carrying pouch with a draw string.

Finally, as a simple test, I transferred several large files from a hard drive in the enclosure to my PC, and Windows 7 reported sustained data transfer speeds of about 30 MB/s over USB and about 50 MB/s over eSATA.

    Inaccurate Description, May 22, 2010

Product works just fine, but only had it one day. I am using it with my 7200 RPM 2.5″ SATA drive, which is hard to find in a pre-packaged unit. I guess it is because it probably doesn’t matter with USB 2.0, but should with eSATA. My biggest complaint is the Amazon description of this product, which is really bare and also has inaccuracies that should NOT be there. First, this product is 5-1/2″ long,3-7/16″ wide, and 5/8″ thick so a little upset that it is too long for the case that I bought for it. Be aware that this product is over an inch longer than my other drive. Bonus unmentioned items was a simple black drawstring bag and a plastic base to allow you to stand the drive up. Don’t get too excited about the bag, because it will be a real stretch to get all the included cables in with it, let alone the base. It is also very thin, so no padding. Clicked under the base is the “Tool” to open the enclosure, which is something you will lose, so keep a large paper clip handy since it works exactly like a floppy or CD drive. When you open the door it stays connected to the enclosure by a slide mechanism, to allow you to pull out the drive from it’s socket easily. I did not have any issues dropping a drive in like another mentioned. Oh, and the USB cable is 36″ long, which is nice, but the double USB to DC cable is only 24″. I can’t blame the product for discrepancies in this description, so I gave this product 4 stars. I bought this over other enclosures because I can quickly swap out SATA drives and take them with me, which it does do as advertised. Finally, “Tool-less” should be “Tool Included, easy to install/remove your drives”. If you don’t need to do this, I would buy another enclosure.

  7. @SevereTstormFan the brands aren’t NEARLY as different as you think, people tend to gain brand loyalty, and such, I bought a cheap one, made in taiwan, not at all a commonly known brand name (i can’t even remember it) and i love it, it works, it was cheap, it’s well built, i mean i dropped it the first time i used it and it still works great!
