This video is an introduction to future videos on how to make your own optical fiber cable for indoor lighting applications. I imagine it could be used for short data transfers but will not say for sure. I am working on getting the perfect filling for this.

Question by Morgan John: “Digital Audio Optical Fiber Cable” or ” HDMI cable?
I just bought a blu-ray player, should buy the “Digital Audio Optical Fiber Cable” for better sound quality or just the HDMI cable would do it? can I use both at the same time?

Best answer:

Answer by bbt91945
HDMI cable carries the video and audio signal, it is the only cable that can handle the 1080P and the 7.1 audio. The optical cable is only for audio only of 5.1 signal. Yes, but why would you and cost more money. Hope this will help you out.

I have a Sony STR-K760P receiver with 6.1 channel surround. I’m feeding my DVD in through digital coax, but my DirecTV and XBox both supply Dolby Digital 5.1 via optical output only. While these cables seem a bit delicate (I certainly wouldn’t want to step on them, and I was careful not to bend them around sharp corners during setup) they work perfectly! Digital is all-or-nothing, either you get the full signal or you don’t. There’s no need to buy $20 – $50 digital optical cables from Monster or any other manufacturer, these will work great. My XBox sounds amazing when playing DD 5.1 games.

OK, you have been shopping for cables to finish off your new home theater system and time after time a salesperson tells you about MONSTER cables. Well, when it comes to HDMI or Red/Blue/Green component cables, getting something nice with gold fittings is the way to go but spending big bucks to buy the MONSTER brand name is way over rated. Search our some similar but way cheaper cables on Amazon.com. Now regarding these optical cables. Brand means nothing. Transferring a light signal is transferring a light signal. A gold fitting means squat. As long as the optical cable you buy delivers the light signal from a cable box to your TV or audio system, you good to go. Example, I purchased a MONSTER Cable on sale for $38 bucks before I saw this cable on Amazon.com. Glad Circuit City has a 30 return policy with receipt because I sure used it. Once my less then less than a buck optical cable arrived and I saw that it delivered a light signal just like the MONSTER cable with the MONSTER price did, I returned that overpriced cable faster than you can say jack rabbit. When installing your optical cable, look close at the shape of the fitting and the shape of the whole it goes in. Kinda trick to make sure you are placing it in correctly and push it in snug. Do not jam it in without lining up which side is up. Also, do not crimp the cable. You are dealing with fiber optics here so keep the cord from bending at a sharp able to keep your light passageway from getting blocked. ENJOY AND SAVE BIG BUCKS.

  5. Great video, I was wondering since the major issue is focusing the suns energy with a parabolic would destroy the fiber optics what if you were to break up the solar energy into its individual components with a prism and pipe only the UV component. Solar radiation drops off sharply at the UV wavelengths so heat build up may not be an issue, and then you could pipe the UV into a phosphorus coated tube. Sound familiar. Florescent lighting works on these principals. You will not need the mercury.

  7. This is an interesting avenue. i wonder why communities could not self sufficiently recyle polymers and say create this or something useful. I really do think that if you are going to advocate safe usage od a combustable and vaporous material that you in fact do model it.

@natepalm1 Think about it. Black absorbs light completely. This would be perfect if you need to stop any light infererrance, say if you wish to place many fibres in parallel, but it will not make the end brighter (although it may appear brighter to the human eye due to the light being high contrast to the black. A reflective coating will mean that more light makes it to the other end of the tube, although this will mean that the direction of most of the extra light will spread out

  16. You haven’t said what you’re connecting to. Just DVD—–> TV, use the HDMI. The Digital audio optical connector on your TV is most likely an OUTPUT just like your DVD. You can’t go output to output.

Just like sex, output has to go to input.
